It consisted of over 200 penguin sculptures which were painted and decorated by artists, schools and community groups. The sculptures were displayed throughout these regions. Go Penguins was organised by Wild in Art, who organised the similar project Go Superlambananas during Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, in conjunction with Liverpool City Council. Penguins were chosen as the subject of the project as part of Liverpool’s Year of the Environment, linking global warming with winter. The penguins sculptures were made from fibreglass, finished in a primer, and were designed by the creative director of Wild in Art, Chris Wilkinson. The design was inspired by the emperor penguin. There were two sizes of penguins, one was high for schools, and the other was high for artists, some of whom created their design in conjunction with local community groups.
